What is an ERC-20 token?

ERC-20 is an official protocol for proposing improvements to the Ethereum (ETH) network and can be understood as a standard for tokens that are created on the Ethereum blockchain. For example, many ICO tokens are ERC-20 tokens. ICOs, or initial coin offerings, are fundraising events where companies raise funds for projects by selling digital tokens.

A traditional finance analogy would be IPOs, or initial public offerings. IPOs are when companies get listed on public stock exchanges and sell stocks (shares) of their company to the public in order to raise funds.

The ERC-20 token standard makes it easier to exchange one ERC-20 token for another, integrate various ERC-20 tokens into platforms like blockchain wallets and exchanges, and more.

ERC-20 Tokens Use Ethereum’s Blockchain

The difference between ERC-20 tokens and cryptocurrencies is that ERC-20 tokens don’t have their own blockchain but run on the Ethereum network. ERC-20 tokens are stored on Ethereum addresses, sent using Ethereum transactions, and use Ethereum to pay for transaction fees.

How to enable ERC-20 tokens on Keevo

ERC-20 tokens are enabled as soon as you activate Your Ethereum account on Keevo LINK. You can now search for your token and turn on tokens you would like to store in your portfolio.

Important information to note:
  1. There are millions of ERC-20 tokens on the market with more made every day. You will not see them all on Keevo LINK.
  2. You can still receive and store any ERC-20 token on your Keevo by sending them to your Ethereum address.

Thank you to everyone who has been giving us feedback and input on our roadmap priorities.
We are working hard to continue to expand our coin support including

  1. XRP - XRP
  2. ADA - Cardano
  3. DOT - Polkadot
  4. SIA - SiaCoin

For inquiring minds, what is ERC-20 and why is this a big deal? Here is a breakdown.

The ever-more-accepted blockchain protocol on Ethereum, known as ERC-20, supplies a nimble, secure approach for developers as well as end-users -- and now Keevo Wallet robustly supports the expanding technology.

Ethereum’s momentum is impacting ERC-20s adoption and functionality (Mark Cuban has a recent example of that.)

Keevo is a next-generation cold wallet for the preservation. Keevo supplies utter control of what goes in and what goes out, including legacy/generational functionality, with a sleek, elegant and best-of-breed form factor.

Here’s an excerpt of key takeaways from Investopedia’s analysis of ERC-20 and its potential:

  • The popular cryptocurrency and blockchain system known as Ethereum is based on the use of tokens, which can be bought, sold, or traded.
  • One of the most significant tokens is called ERC-20, which has emerged as the technical standard used for all smart contracts on the Ethereum blockchain for token implementation.
  • Plenty of well-known digital currencies use the ERC-20 standard, including Maker (MKR), Basic Attention Token (BAT), Augur (REP), and OmiseGO (OMG).

The crypto market continues to expand with not only its market value, but also with broader adoption with investors. For retail investors, having owned, controlled access in a secure environment becomes more and more critical.
